California Love

Well I've been out in Los Angeles for a few months now. Turns out moving during the Christmas season isn't the best time to do so work wise. Fortunately I've been lucky to get a few freelance gigs here and there so life could be worse. The upside is that I've been able to experiment and work on a new techniques.

I finally decided to crack open Flash and start making some animatin shorts. I haven'e gotten to far butI just designed this cute lil' fella and i'm working on some scenes I can plug him into. THe bakground isn't quite finished but it's coming along.

More "New" Stuff

TWO DAYS IN A ROW!!!??? This is MADNESS!!!!!
Okay... so this isn't really "new" work. Just new to my blog. This one here is about a year old. I am going to paint back into it soon to fix the left hand. I never really liked how it got resolved as well as the wings behind the figure.

This is a portrait of my buddy, G. He's a writer, hence the vomiting letters. It was originally concepted as part of a triptych. On the right there was going to be my friend Emily yelling and illustrations coming out of her mouth. The center image was never resolved in the concept and work/life got really busy and I had to put the project on the back burner so to speak.

This is a portrait of my girlfriend Alex that showed in the Spaces Gallery in Cleveland Ohio. I'm a big fan of this painting because it was the first completed painting on panel that I have done.

Well that's all for now. I only have 15 days left at American Greetings. 8 days left to finish my sculpture. And 21 days until I start my cross-country drive to Los Angeles. Things are moving pretty fast and I have to make a conscious effort to stay focused and in the moment so I don't get overwhelmed. I'll be working on the sculpture more tonight, the dreadlocks are breaking off the back so I have to come up with a better solution. Hopefully I'll have more stuff to show tomorrow.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz*snort*...wuuuuhhhh...???

WOW!!! It has been a looooooooong time since I last posted. Life has been pretty crazy. I've been working in Cleveland for the last year and a half and have decided to move on to Los Angeles. Working in Cleveland has been amazing, but my girlfriend lives in L.A. and 2,344 miles is a bit far for a long distance relationship.

A lot of things have happened since my last post, I showed some paintings in an art show, I've illustrated a few greeting cards and done a few freelance jobs here and there. The last 2 weeks have been the most eventful though.

My car was broken into:
And I've been working on my first sculpture for a charity art show November 1st.I think I am almost done sculpting and will be moving on to painting it tonight or tomorrow. I think for my first sculpture it's going pretty well. The link to the art show is here.
There are a lot of amazing artists showing.... and then me. If you're in the area drop by and enjoy the madness.

Da Bears!

And here's another cartoon in the style of pookie (down below) since it seems to be a favorite.

Here's another style sample I made for AG. Just trying to give them an idea of the range I can do.

Freelancing for AG

Recently I met with the hiring manager and overall director of artwork in the Alternative Cards Department(Humor) at American Greetings and spoke to him about possibley freelancing for him. Before meeting with him I spent some time looking at what was popular, and seemed to get the best response. From that I created these new cartoons from various styles I observed.
This was the most popular around the office. Apparently this style is very well received in the card market.
This is a NEB. Not sure why it's called that but it means a non sexually descriptive character. This could be masculine OR feminine. Another popular piece.
Angry old people are always funny. This was another one he liked.

Keeping it simple. He liked these as well.
Keeping the line work very juvenile and sketchy.

Style influenced by Shane Glines, www.shaneglines.net.

I'm working on more that are a littler more complex; multiple figures, backgrounds, etc. Hopefully I will have more posted soon. Also I am working on a cartoon section for my website. More to come...
